Why use the AkuWM Healthy Snack?

Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein, these include the essential or nonessential. Non-essential amino acids are produced in the human body from other proteins and carbohydrates. Essential amino acids are not produced in the human body and must therefore be obtained from the diet. There are eight main essential amino acids for the adult human body - leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan and lysine. When a protein contains the correct ratio of essential amino for a human being, we consider it to have a high biological value. If one or more of the essential amino acids are rare, we consider the protein to have a low biological value. High-biological value proteins are obtained from animal sources such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt. Low biological value proteins are found in plants such as legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables.

Hi-Maize® is a natural and unique form of fibre. Most starches that we consume are digested in the digestive tract completely and utilized. However, some starches resist digestion and travel to the colon, where they act like dietary fibre. This type of starch is called resistant starch (RS). Hi-Maize® is a resistant starch that comes from high amylose varieties of corn, a result of nearly twenty years of conventional plant breeding. Hi-Maize® is in not chemically modified in any way and is processed using standard procedures.
Adding Hi-Maize® to bread, biscuits, pasta and cereals, will increase their fibre content without compromising their taste. Substituting flour in part with a resistant starch will reduce the content of the digestible starch and thus also the amount of glucose that would normally be absorbed into the bloodstream. Foods that are high in easily digestible starch as for example white bread, rapidly release glucose from the small intestine into the blood - this spike in blood glucose is then followed by a rapid decline. Foods containing dietary fibre and resistant starch cause a slower rise in blood glucose thereby maintaining stability. In addition to reducing a food‘s Glycemic Index (GI), dietary fibre is required for maintaining the proper intestinal activity and a healthy gut, it prevents constipation, helps regulate cholesterol and excrete toxic substances from the body.
